Early Years
Early Years
Scelestine was born in Magnolia, Arkansas, and raised in Ohio. She is the seventh of thirteen siblings. She started at age five singing in a choir directed by Viola Miller amid James Cleveland, Reverend Phillips,
The Staple Singers and Aretha Franklin, just naming a few, not knowing who they were.
Mavis Staple's brother picked her up and told her
"If you were not here sitting in this front row, we would know something would be wrong."
That was at The New Hope Baptist Church in Ohio. She never missed a singing convention.
Scelestine started a gospel group in Arkansas with friends and family. She also started singing with The Tramps in the Chitterlings Circuit. Scelestine had a surprise birthday gift from the Tramps, singing backup on Proud Mary with The Ike And Tina Turner Review. At twelve, Scelestine and her younger sister wrote a song presented to a family group. At sixteen, Scelestine joined a family group out of Lorain Ohio Fabulous Technique, which opened another door to perform with Command Performance, leading her to a manager. Scelestine started having opportunities to be the opening act for such names as Patrice Rushen, Stephanie Mills, Gil Scott Huron, Larry Graham, Graham Central Station, and Odyssey, to name a few. She also had the opportunity to work with Larry Holms but turned the contract down to raise her children. Scelestine returned to singing in Gospel Conventions with Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland Gospel Choir, Mighty Clouds of Joy, James Ingram, and many more. In 1989 she started managing her family group" Les Moye Ice, which toured in and out of Asia. She also worked with another artist out of Asia. A Studio presented a song written by Prince to Les Moye Ice, which opened doors for everyone in the group. Scelestine started appearing in movies and videos.
